| Company Info: |
Smith Transport is a Pennsylvania-based company providing a complete line of logistics services to businesses located throughout the continental United States. We are known for our commitment to safety, service and treating our employees with respect. Our drivers are the best in the industry.
The founder and owner of Smith Transport, Mr. Barry F. Smith, began his storied career at the age of eight by performing minor repairs on his father's fleet of three trucks. By age nine, he had rebuilt his first flathead V-8 engine with the assistance of his mother, Rose. At the same time, he was learning to drive these units. At the age of sixteen, Mr. Smith began his own business by contracting the hauling of creamery milk and cream within the local area. At age eighteen, he began his long-haul career in trucking as an Independent Contractor.
While operating his own unit, Mr. Smith also managed a fleet of five trucks for his father. At this critical juncture, Barry also began to learn the difficult tasks involved in planning, organizing, directing and controlling a fleet of trucks. With this valuable experience in hand, Mr. Smith set out on a new entrepreneurial endeavor by purchasing and refurbishing long-haul tractors. This was the beginning of the transportation element of the business, as we know it today.
A short time later, the need for warehouse and storage space in the local area led to the initiation of another successful business venture. Smith Transport Warehouse, Inc. was established. Successful acquisition of some large loyal and dedicated accounts and the granting of Interstate Commerce Commission Operating Authority to transport selected commodities was the catalyst for the future phenomenal growth of the company. One of Mr. Smith's greatest attributes is his ability to "Keep on Keeping On", even in the face of tremendous adversity. Through his skill, determination and hard work, Mr. Smith has continued to lead the company to greater growth and success year after year.
The dedication to achieve quality and excellence of service to customers and within the company is never-ending with Mr. Smith. Through his leadership skills and entrepreneurial abilities, the company has grown from operating five tractors to over 1,000 units. Warehousing space now approaches 3,000,000 square feet. A full line of logistics services are now tailored and customized to meet the unique and precisely defined requirements of customers with which the company has formed long-term strategic alliances.
Aside from being the Owner and President of Smith Transport, Mr. Smith is also a member of some very prestigious transportation industry committees. One in which Mr. Smith takes great pride is the Rockwell International Senior Advisory Board that meets to discuss future equipment and component needs for the industry.
Within the local community, Mr. Smith serves on the Board of Directors of several banks and the company energetically participates in all appropriate economic development efforts.
In recognition for his accomplishments and many contributions to the business community, Mr. Smith was honored as "Entrepreneur of the Year" in 1994. This award has generated an even greater desire to improve existing operations and to proactively seek out new business endeavors that add value to the customer and are profitable for Smith Transport. In 1999, Mr. Smith was once again honored as “Entrepreneur of the Year”. |
